Catalog Description
English language development and diversification. Various uses of English. The emergence of Englishes. English as a lingua franca. Nativism debate. The historical, linguistic, cultural, and ideological issues.
Course Objectives
The aim of this course is to introduce the basics of various uses of Englishes. This course aims to raise awareness of a variety of World Englishes and develop students’ understanding of the similarities and differences in the different uses of English. It aims to enable learners to build a key cultural competence by exposing them to different cultures. The course further aims to examine the topics of nativism and English as a lingua franca.

- state the basic reasons behind the global expansion of English,
- identify the theoretical models and relevant terminology in the field of global English,
- distinguish the use of English in different countries,
