This course aims to introduce the fundamental concepts of classroom interactional competence (CIC) in line with second language interactional competence and conversation analysis. It provides conversation analytic framework and related transcription conventions for a thorough understanding of sequential organization of interaction in language classrooms. For this purpose, students investigate data derived from natural classroom interaction to conceptualize CIC as well as interactional and multimodal resources observed in language classrooms. In so doing, the course enables students to raise an awareness of maximizing interactional space, shaping learners’ contributions, managing learners’ knowledge displays.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- produce transcriptions of video and audio recordings of language classroom interaction,
- apply a conversation analytic investigation to transcriptions of classroom interactional data,
- conceptualize classroom interactional competence and its role as an interactional phenomenon in language classrooms,
- demonstrate a wide range of interactional practices,
- use relevant interactional and/or multimodal resources to foster language learning.
