This course presents basic concepts, tools, and techniques used by analysts in today’s public and nonprofit organizations; provides a broad overview of the field of health economics and examines how standard concepts and methods in economics can be used to understand incentives and decision making in health-related transactions. This course aims to develop an understanding of the relevance of economic concepts to the health care sector; to describe the system of health care financing and delivery arrangements in the health care sector, and to impart an understanding of the role of economic factors in the development of public policy concerning health and health care.
Upon succesful completion of this course, a student will be able to
1. Use economic analysis to evaluate health economics issues.
2. Demonstrate awareness of a further range of contemporary health and health care policies.
3. Explain how policies generally come to be made, how policies shape public action and how this action can produce a variety of results.
4. Develop understanding of some key concepts and techniques of economic analysis related to health and health care.
5. Analyze policy problems, find creative solutions, and implement policies and programs effectively.
6. Communicate the results of policy analysis to managers, decision makers, and the general public.
7. Demonstrate knowledge of basic concepts of economics and politics/political science in relation to their application to global health issues.
8. Apply the core disciplines of economics, politics, and political economy to real world global health policy debates and challenges.
9. Carry out a Project and produce a well-structured, well-written, and clearly argued report.
