The British Council has announced the recipients of its latest Transnational Education Exploratory(TNE) Grant awards, recognizing innovative proposals aimed at bridging educational divides and fostering global collaboration. Among the selected projects is a joint initiative by Newcastle University and TED University to develop a postgraduate programme in English Language Teaching (ELT) / TESOL.

This 12-month project, commencing in January 2025, will be co-led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Müge Satar from Newcastle University’s School of Education, Communication, and Language Sciences (Applied Linguistics) and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zeynep Bilki from TED University’s English Language Education Program in the College of Education. Dr. Satar and Dr. Bilki will collaborate with a distinguished team, including Dr. Jim Chan, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ufuk Balaman, Prof. Dr. Jan Bamford, and other academic and professional staff members from both institutions. Together, they aim to address barriers to transnational education through an innovative 1+1 dual-degree framework that seeks to enhance mobility for students and staff while establishing a high standard for quality assurance in international education.

The programme is designed to increase access to higher education and actively contribute to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in promoting quality education and reducing inequalities. This initiative marks a significant step forward in fostering collaboration and inclusivity in global education.
