Catalog Description
Thermodynamic system and properties. Thermodynamic processes, work and heat interactions. The first law of thermodynamics applied to closed and open systems. The second law of thermodynamics and entropy concept. Irreversibility.
Course Objectives

This is a fundamental course to teach basic thermodynamics concepts and the laws of thermodynamics. Energy conservation, entropy concept, first and second laws applied to different types of systems constitute the basics of the course.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Identify thermodynamic systems and system properties,
  2. Differentiate between heat transfer and work interactions at system boundary,
  3. Apply energy conservation principles to closed and open systems,
  4. Relate the second law of thermodynamics principles to systems,
  5. Familiarize with concepts of entropy and irreversibility.
