Catalog Description
American literature and its history. Main concepts and techniques in text analysis. Main text types and genres. Important periods and literary movements. Novels, short stories, poems and plays from different periods. Literature in life. Critical analysis and texts and art evaluation.
Course Objectives

The aim of the course is to introduce students American literature in the context of historical and cultural movements from the early 19th century through the late 20th century. Within the scope of the course, the students become familiar with basic terms, concepts and techniques in literature, analyze literary work of various genres from different periods, and discuss the contribution and role of literature in our lives.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

 

  1. identify different types of literary genres and techniques in American literature,
  2. examine the works of major writers, literary periods, social events, and intellectual movements in American literature,
  3. analyze literary and cultural texts with a critical eye,
  4. evaluate the literary texts within American socio-cultural context,
  5. review how writers express their social, moral, and cultural concerns in literary works.
