At the end of this class, students will be able to:

1)  become aware of the constant interplay between language and society in both English-speaking as well as in societies that speak other languages 

2)  become aware of his/her attitudes to varieties of English and other languages

3)  explain “language” in linguistic terms

4)  explain how various social, cultural, and affective factors influence language, communication and language planning

5)  describe a process of language change

6)  analyze a conversation

7)  explain the characteristics of language use
