Global Citizenship Secondary Field
The secondary field in Global Citizenship (CIT) is offered to help students develop their identities as global citizens. This includes the understanding of their rights and responsibilities as active citizens of today’s world, an increasingly complex web of connections and interdependencies. The secondary field program aims at cultivating young people capable and comfortable to work, to live in and to engage with international and intercultural settings. To do this, the program will intend to (i) develop students’ competences of grammar, logic/dialectic, and rhetoric - the trivium, the basic level of the artes liberales; (ii) develop students capabilities of civic/community engagement by hands-on experience.
The goal of the program is to improve students’ critical thinking skills so as to enable them to address local and global challenges as critically thinking and socially responsible graduates. Promoting civic engagement and active citizenship through curricular and cocurricular initiatives will not only invigorate the liberal arts modality at TEDU but also contribute to the fulfilment of community engagement related strategic objectives that have been recently outlined under TEDU’s “city university” outlook. For a comprehensive conceptualization of the global citizenship programs in higher education institutions, please refer to the Journal of Studies in International Education article, “The Global Citizen Conceptualized: Accommodating Ambiguity” by Lilley, Barker and Harris (2016). For a critical account of a similar program carried out by Sabancı University, please see the Innovations in Education and Teaching International article, “Enhancing students’ responsibility towards society through civic involvement projects” by Dilek Çetindamar and Tara Hopkins (2008).
The secondary field is addressed to all students interested and will be coordinated by Professor Dr Ali Cengizkan and Assistant Professor Dr Ela Ataç.
