Adaptation Training for Syrian Children

TED University realized an adaptation training program targeting the Syrian children who study at Ankara, Mamak.

 

Approximately 62 thousand of the students who immigrated to Turkey from Syria due to the instable conditions of the country study in state schools and 248 thousand Syrian children study at temporary education centers. In this process, universities and academicians carry different projects, along with the ministry of education, other public institutions and non-governmental organizations.

TED University Faculty of Education, faculty member assistant professor Elif Karslı realized the four month long “Building Bridges of Education: Syrian Children and their Families who study within the Turkish Education System” project with the financial support of the USA Embassy. The students of the teaching department participate the program carried at a school designated by the education expert Şahin Aybek from the Mamak District Directorate. The project targets to support the Syrian students and their families by strengthening the relations between the school and the parents.

Turkish-Arabic translation support

The training programs in the scope of the program aim at showing the teachers how they can support the refugee children in the classroom and how to communicate with children who have different language proficiency levels. Seminars which bring the Syrian mothers, teachers and the children together were organized assisted by Turkish-Arabic translators. The activities carried under the program facilitate the official procedures and fosters the adaptation of the refugee children. Syrian families took active role in the activities and acquired information on creating sustainability in education in Turkey.

TED University faculty member Assistant Professor Dr. Karslı also prepares a larger project which will include supporting teachers who has Syrian children in their classrooms in Ankara, İstanbul, Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa and Hatay.

The TUBITAK project GÖÇ-MAT will involve experienced mathematic teachers. The teachers will receive different training for 2 years in the scope of the program which targets to increase the success of refugee children in mathematics. The project aims to encourage the parents to take on an active role in the educational activities of their children.
